In the modern world, the market is full of different kinds of toothpaste. Some for children others for old. Are we using the right toothpaste for our family?
We have to look for the ingredient present in the paste first before using it. Some are the essential and basic ingredients for good oral health.
The first essential element is fluoride in toothpaste. It protects and prevents the tooth from decay and cavities.it also helps in making the enamel stronger and even reverses the early stages of acid damage. The by-products of fluoride in toothpaste are in form of Sodium monofluorophosphate, Sodium fluoride, Stannous fluoride. Their concentration is different for children below 12 or above 12. Fluoride is present in portable drinking water also so choose the concentration wisely. Excess or deficient amount of fluoride have their side effect
The second essential element is tartar/anti-calculus agents in the toothpaste. Bacteria present in the mouth form a layer on the tooth surface that leads to plaque formation. This plaque, later on, turns into tartar or calculus which is hard inconsistency. Tartar presents both on the tooth surface as well as on the gum surface. it may lead to gums disease or affect the aesthetic of the oral cavity. The by-products of anti-calculus are in form of Zinc citrate, Pyrophosphates, Gautrez acid, Zinc chloride.
The third element is desensitizing agents in toothpaste. These are present in minute quantity in the toothpaste. They help to reduce sensitivity by both hot and cold. It takes 3-4 weeks for full effect. The derivative of desensitizing agents is Sodium fluoride Potassium nitrate Strontium chloride.
Important note
For children below 12 have different concentrations of ingredients in their toothpaste according to their age group. If you are confused to choose a toothpaste for you then consult your dentist. Remember your toothpaste is only part of a complete dental health regimen. Regular dental flossing and dental check-up are essential for good oral health
